THE CLIENT

The Daily Health Conference is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting health and wellness through impactful public talks, participatory workshops, and professional training all over the world. The Daily Health Conference began in 1983 in San Francisco as a conference where Medicine, Health, and Wellness converged, and it now covers nearly all health-related topics — from nutrition to sleep to addiction — in over 100 languages.

The Daily Health Conference offers an online membership on their website. Even though The Daily Health Conference has numerous years of experience in the field, its program has been slow to catch up with technology. They have seen a substantial drop in memberships.

Now the Daily Health Conference wants to find a way to offer more value to its members.

THE CHALLENGE

Health and wellbeing are topics that are widely on the surface at the moment and therefore the business around them is also rapidly growing. The market around health related apps is booming and consumers are turning to them in the search for various reasons such as education, meditation, or just recreational fun to unwind from their stressful everyday life.

While brainstorming what the new mobile apps should do, the board realized that the opportunities for translating the concept of wellness into a digital product are virtually infinite. Their members could use their apps to keep track of diet plans, fitness programs, mental wellness, stress levels, water intake and so on. The posibilities are endless and they are not exactly sure where to begin!

As a result, they’ve organized a competition for the upcoming conference. Designers will conduct user research to understand people’s relationships with mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Designers will then create a prototype for a tool that will motivate them to take action.

SOLUTION

RESEARCH

We started our project by digging into secondary research to figure out which direction we should go under the large umbrella of wellness applications. We decided on stress relief as that seemed to be a much talked about issue in the current years especially within working professionals. We looked at the different methods to help with stress and found most apps to focus on meditation, creative tasks, or diary and habit trackers.

We decided to design for iPhone as the iOS market share in the category of health applications is still leading the market also keeping in mind that 56,8 % (statista.com) of health application users are women.

SURVEY RESULTS

Through a survey we found out that work is the main reason for stress

The majority of people who experience stress are working professionals in their 30s

43,6% of the surveyed people feel stress 1–2 times a day

Stress impacts mood and efficiency levels

Next to physical activities, creative tasks are most used for stress relief

IDEATION

We started our ideation process with a brainstorming session using Miro. We put down all the ideas we had gathered during the research part and afterwards we did a dot voting where each of us selected five ideas that were the most meaningful to us. Through this process, we found a clear pattern and could see that journaling and mood tracking were the winning ideas that we would start building.

EMPATHY MAP

By creating an empathy map we could further categorize the information we had gathered so far to start forming a complete picture of our user. We could point out that the main stress is coming from having to juggle lots of tasks simultaneously and the responsibility they feel towards others. However, as we are searching for the best way for our target user to relieve stress we focused on the "gains" and aspects that made the user feel good. These were clearly associations with friends and family, and recreational tasks. Their values are pending between ambitious work goals and meaningful experiences with loved ones.

EMPATHY MAP

By creating a user journey we could identify and understand where the user feels most stressed. The stress is coming in cycles and by taking breaks she can unwind. Our idea is to add a creative and positive task that could be accomplished during a short break or at the end of the day.

PERSONA & PROBLEM STATEMENT

After identifying our user persona and understanding her path through better the user journey we came to the following problem statement:

"The working professional needs be have a creative outlet to organize their thoughts and emotions to lower their stress levels because they feel pressure to accomplish all their tasks."

MID-FIDELITY PROTOTYPE

We started designing the first version of our ides as a mid-fidelity prototype with that we could conduct user testing and find out how our idea is being perceived. We created a functioning prototype using Figma and laid out the main actions and user flow, this way we could directly watch the user go through the steps and detect difficulties and intuitive actions and patterns.

TESTING

Through usability tests we found out that the original order of the journal entry steps was not clear. In our first version, we asked the user to select icons first which turned out to be confusing. After we changed the order to have the text entry first the icon became more meaningful.

We increased the size of the icons, and we added descriptive text to them to clarify their meaning.

In our original hi-fi prototype we had a colorcoded system for the journal entries with the idea that they would indicate the users mood for the day and add an overview. The color coding was not evident to the user and only made the UI more messy so we turned to a uniform card template.

STYLE GUIDE

As the primary color we decided to go with a calming soft purple to enhance a welcoming environment. As an accent color we chose to pair a bright yellow as a warm and positive impact.
The modern and soft sans serif font “Karla” and the rounded icons form a nice match in style.

The style guide states as well how the icons and buttons react when activated and the gradient shade of the menu bar.

The Final Prototype

LAST WORDS

For future steps, we would like to develop the idea of positive daily quotes that we had in our ideation but that we did not have time to implement. As this was an MVP assignment we focused on the tracking feature to add value to the user by giving them an overview of their days and the possibility to detect patterns and therefore make possible changes to lower their stress levels and enhance their quality of life. As we found out from our research that creative tasks are a popular method of releasing everyday stress the addition of creative tasks such as drawing or games could also add further value to the platform.
